Youth Mental Health First Aid

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an intensive two-day training course, which was developed specifically for people who regularly interact with youth.  The course covers the following topics:

  • Types and prevalence of youth mental health problems
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use disorder
  • Eating disorders
  • Deliberate self harm

Youth Mental Health First Aid is essential training for anyone who works with or regularly interacts with youth.  This training is so important because:

  • Mental health issues are responsible for 55% of the overall burden of disease between 15-24 year olds
  • Mental health problems often first develop during adolescence and early adulthood
  • There is a stigma attached with mental health problems which may hinder young people from seeking help
  • Youth may not be well informed
  • Professional help may not always be on hand
  • A young person may not realise that they need help of that effective help is available for them
  • Members of the public often do not know how to respond and the helper's actions mat determine how quickly the young person gets help and/or recovers
