Youth Mental Health First Aid is an intensive two-day training course, which was developed specifically for people who regularly interact with youth. The course covers the following topics:
- Types and prevalence of youth mental health problems
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Psychosis
- Substance use disorder
- Eating disorders
- Deliberate self harm
Youth Mental Health First Aid is essential training for anyone who works with or regularly interacts with youth. This training is so important because:
- Mental health issues are responsible for 55% of the overall burden of disease between 15-24 year olds
- Mental health problems often first develop during adolescence and early adulthood
- There is a stigma attached with mental health problems which may hinder young people from seeking help
- Youth may not be well informed
- Professional help may not always be on hand
- A young person may not realise that they need help of that effective help is available for them
- Members of the public often do not know how to respond and the helper's actions mat determine how quickly the young person gets help and/or recovers
